Florida Part 1

Sweaty

HOT!!! Oh really? Dum-dums to go in August, WHY do we do that?!

After we arrived at Gary's cousins in St. Pete, we were shown to our own little room with a bathroom. The shower didn't work and the bathroom had no door on it but it was still private and clean. It had a wonderful smell of mothballs to it which I LOVE cause it reminds me of my Grandmother on my mothers side. Tom and Syndey have a great big old house. They have the cutest little baby boy who's 7 months old and named Colby. Just a nice happy little family, right? More about that later......
After awhile we went to the grocery store to get the rest of the supplies we needed for our picnic at Fort De Soto Park (http://www.pinellascounty.org/park/05_Ft_DeSoto.htm). Lots of work involved for this party but everyone pitched in and we had LOTS of food and laughs. The park is very clean, with clean bathrooms nearby and the beach was about 100 yards away. I guess it's a sand bar because you had to walk a LONG way before the water ever got above your chest. Really beautiful. It's also a "family friendly" park which means NO ALCOHOL. That was a bummer, at times, but it was just to hot to drink anyway! I think I had about 8 bottled waters. Tommy had set up a volley ball net and later in the day a HORDE (20?) of what we think were Portuguese young men and women, asked if they could play. They were so good at the game and so involved playing and yelling that as we were getting ready to leave, Tommy asked them if they wanted to buy the net and ball from him. Ha! He sold it for $40.00 (he made $15.00) We also gave them a lot of bottled water (they didn't have any!)
Tropical Island

On Monday we went to the Salvador Dali museum (http://www.salvadordalimuseum.org/). Wow, it was very cool and interesting. It's right on the waterfront with lots of boats anchored. I really didn't know very much about him but now I know what a fascinating and talented person he really was. Off the beaten track to be sure but, hey, who ain't?
Painter

Tuesday we hung around and listened to Sydney berate Tommy then we (me,Tommy (no Sydney, yeah!), Connor, Gary and Alan went to a baseball game featuring the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at the Tropicana Field stadium, which is indoors and AIR CONDITIONED (http://tampabay.devilrays.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/tb/ballpark/tb_ballpark_history.jsp). Even though the Devil Rays lost it was still fun but snacks are way overpriced as everyone knows.

Dali was on acid. It would have been cool to go to that museum though!

They never mentioned his tripping! Hmpt, that would have been a real nice tidbit! Yeah, his pictures are so...well, disturbing in a thoughtful way. He put two, small black figures with long shadows in a lot of his pictures. One was his father and the other himself, as a child. He did that to express his extreme sadness that his father NEVER understood or "got" him. Several oil paintings and sketches were on display that he had done as a child. Even then his star was shining very brightly.

Do you really need someone to tell you he was on acid? You saw his work, right? He was nutso.

HOW can you SAY that? First of all, even if he was an acid head, he certainly wasn't one ALL his life and he was painting from a very early age, in an abstract style. Just because someone's work is...extreme doesn't mean they're on drugs Amy. Some of our greatest artists, writers and musicians have the most abstract of thoughts. They tend to experience and see the world a bit differently than most people then share it with us. That's ART. Someone back me up here!

I didn't say his art sucked, I just said it's obvious he was tripping. Also, Freud did cocaine. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. I'm not saying his contributions weren't important, I was simply stating a fact.

How do you know that he was on acid? Did he tell you?

Shut up, you know it's true.

I haven't found any evidence in my research that suggests Dali did LSD. He is known to have said to his friend, Timothy Leary (who was a well know tripper) "Why do you need LSD, when you have Salvador Dalỉ?" In other words his artwork was enough! Ha! What a character!
